Unique Ways to Keep Your Guests Entertained at Your Wedding
Planning a wedding? Research shows that one of the things couples worry most about when planning their big day is guests having a good time and enjoying themselves. With so much time and money spent on planning the perfect day, you want to get it right and make your day truly memorable for everyone.
There are some small things you can do to really go the extra mile. As a wedding celebrant in London, Brighton and beyond, I go to lots of weddings! From my experience, here are some unique ways to make your wedding ceremony and day more entertaining for everyone.
Errr…. the ceremony itself!
A sure-fire way to make your wedding memorable and entertaining is by hiring a wedding celebrant to marry you. That way, your wedding will be totally personalised, authentic and all about the two of you as a couple. It’ll involve lots of great stories and anecdotes to bring your guests in and make everyone feel included. From belly laughs to happy tears, working with a wedding celebrant will get your guests talking afterwards – for all the right reasons! It can involve different symbolic acts and guest participation, too, to make your guests a living, breathing part of the moment you get married.
Drag & burlesque performers:
Now this is right up my street! Hiring a drag performer for your wedding to entertain and interact with your guests will make it truly memorable and SO fun. Likewise, a burlesque performer is an amazing touch.
I went to a wedding recently where there was a drag dress-up area complete with a dressing table and make-up so that guests could get involved too if they wanted.
Palm Reader:
Having a palm reader that can tell guests their fortune is a great way to keep people entertained. This could be a setup in the grounds or venue itself that guests go to, or you could have a wandering palm reader who seeks people out to read their fortunes between courses at the dinner table or in the line for the bar.
Belly dancer:
This can be a great way to get people on the dancefloor and get the party started!
Flash-mob:
Why not hire a flash mob to entertain your guests! This could even be part of your ceremony, with people planted to start singing and dancing at just the right moment. This would be a moment your guests would remember forever.
Dress-up area:
Whether this is fancy dress, wigs, drag or in keeping with the theme of your wedding, this is a really fun interactive way to get people involved and enjoying themselves. It goes down especially well after a few drinks!
Photobooth:
There are SO many different options here. From themed photobooths, vintage booths or doing it cheaply by simply setting up a camera on a tripod with lights, you can let your guests have lots of fun taking pictures that will commemorate the day. We did this at our wedding, and it was a great way to capture it all, with endless photos of guests having a great time. This works particularly well with the suggestion of having a dress-up area above!
Cocktail-making station with personalised kits:
Allow your guests to create their own cocktails, exactly how they want them. You can provide kits that you know everyone will love and have a mixologist there to teach people how to create their perfect drink.
Quizzes:
Whether in the ceremony itself or during the speeches, this can be an interactive way to get your guests involved. You could have something similar to a live Mr. & Mrs. quiz, to bring everyone into your relationship.
Artist capturing the day
I went to a London wedding recently where an artist was capturing the day live in drawing and watercolour. They painted guests eating and having a great time on the dancefloor without them knowing, then gave it to them afterwards. The guests were amazed and so touched.
Outdoor games:
Setting up some games for your outdoor ceremony is a great way to keep guests entertained. When I got married, we had a 2-day festival-style weekend, and on the second day we set up games like croquet and played Fancy Dress Olympics (relay races in teams involving fancy dress!) Everyone loved it.
Sing-along:
Guests love a sing-along. It gets everyone into the community feeling and allows people to have a real laugh. I’ve been known to include this as part of the ceremony, but you could do it at any point of the day. Some key pointers are picking a song that everyone knows (think Beatles or Madonna – something that will transcend all guest ages)! Going with something obscure can lead to a bit of dirge….
I’ve heard of some pretty far-out stuff, too…. like a couple who had a tattoo artist at their wedding. They exclusively did tattoos of the couple’s names in a love heart…and a lot of drunk people got them done! I definitely wouldn’t recommend this one, but it shows that the sky really is the limit.
